Teenagers with problems and Heavy Metal Music

Current local and national statistics reveal an alarming increase in the number of teenagers with severe problems, including violent behavior and drug abuse. In addition to heavy drug use, these teenagers with violent behavior often reveal an abnormal association with Satanic groups and with the type of Heavy Metal Music that involves sinister themes.

Law enforcement officers have observed increasing cult activity among teens who exhibit strange, anti-social behavior and an obsession with darkness, death and Heavy Metal Music.

Heavy Metal Music is a big business in the American entertainment scene. And it focuses on a singular target audience: American youth. Some Heavy Metal Music combines a mesmerizing beat with persuasive anti-social messages of aggression, violence, rebellion and suicide, plus the appeal of demonic power and Satanistic practices. This form is frequently referred to as “Death” Heavy Metal Music.

Normal teenagers and Heavy Metal Music

Fortunately, most teenagers are not seriously affected by Heavy Metal Music. They may “dabble in it”. They᾿ll listen to it as part of a teenage fad. They may even wear some bizarre clothing bearing anti-social messages. Or they may decorate their rooms with posters of Heavy Metal performers and stars. Such attire, listening habits and room decor, while seeming somewhat bizarre by parental standards, is not of itself a dangerous situation. Some 75 to 80 percent of teenagers pass though this stage unaffected. If a teenager displays a positive, up-beat attitude most of the time and is doing well in school, then those superficial appearances of being a Heavy Metal Music fan do not necessarily mean there is a troubled youth living in your home.

High risk youth and Heavy Metal Music

However, there are serious consequences for 20 to 25 percent of our teenagers. These individuals may be chemically dependent and may come from dysfunctional families. They often display severe emotions, such as hatred, resentment, rebellion and intense anger. Heavy Metal musicians have become the heroes and role models for many of our high risk youth. These performers, with their charismatic personalities, deliver the messages that these youngsters want to hear.

Some 80 percent of young people treated in the Adolescent Program of Care Unit Hospital of Fort Worth admit to having listened to Heavy Metal Music regularly. Their preference is for the form that often conveys unconventional themes of violence, suicide, hate, rebellious behavior, sexual involvement and glorification of Satan.

The main theme of “Death” Heavy Metal Music claims that the higher power controlling the world is generated in hate, anger and violence, personified by Satan. This theme generally promises that such Satanic power and immediate gratification can be bestowed on all who participate in the cult. Much of the repetitious theme becomes subliminal, consistently reaching the subconscious of our high risk youth.

Day in and day out they are exposed to sinister messages on radio, cable, TV, record albums, compact discs and video tapes. High risk youngsters who are harboring feelings of hostility against parents, teachers or other traditional authority figures, readily identify with lyrics of that type of Heavy Metal Music that conveys destructive anti-social themes.

Satanic cults and adolescents

Satanic cults, like any other cult, offer a sense of belonging, identification and gratification. Sex and violence are used frequently to experience power and to desensitize individuals from feelings of guilt. The major attractions are free drugs and sex, recognition and a false sense of power.

Cults destroy the ego authority of the individual and create a helpless feeling. Adolescents who come from dysfunctional families and are involved in drugs are easy prey for destructive cults.

The cult offers easy solutions to their deep seated anger and resentment toward parents, teachers and society at large. It provides an opportunity to channel these frustrations by promoting aggressive behavior and a false sense of control and power. A misguided concept of freedom is also used frequently to manipulate and to coerce young adults toward Satanic cults. Often the theme of Heavy Metal Music focuses on a freedom of choice that means you can do whatever you want, whenever you want and that there is no God, no conscience and no guilt.

Watch for warning signs

There are definite warning signs that parents, counselors, teachers, social workers and therapists should be sensitive to. These signs in youngsters should be taken seriously. They include:

1. Maintaining an overwhelmingly and continuously negative attitude.

2. Display of antagonistic and hostile attitude towards parents.

3. Rapid decrease in school grades.

4. Dropping old friends; associating with new friends who refuse to be identified.

5. Wearing black clothes, Satanic-style jewelry, heavy into leather.

6. Intensifying interest in occult literature; for example, the Satanic bible, movies and music, as well as bizarre video games or an obsession with games such as Dungeons and Dragons.

7. Starting a notebook with Satanic themes, numbers and letters, e.g., “666”, “9 and 13”, “FFF” (the sixth letter of the alphabet), plus traditional Satanic symbols such as the pentagram (encircled, upside down five-point star), encircled swastikas and other emblems of Satanism.

8. Preoccupation with anarchy, death, suicide, property destruction, abnormal rejection of traditional authority figures, violence against people and animals, with no feelings of guilt or remorse.

Diminishing the influence of Heavy Metal Music on troubled teenagers

It is difficult to establish a clear and direct cause and effect correlation between any type of music and destructive behavior. More research is needed to determine a causal relationship. However, based on Dr. M. Basheer Ahmed᾿s long experience and close personal observations, there is a strong indication that those Heavy Metal Music themes of casual sex, violence, drugs and Satanic practices that are being delivered in ever increasing dosages to our American young people may well constitute a serious and increasing public health problem.

Parents can play a significant role in lessening the influence of this music by becoming aware of what children are listening to and what message is reaching them continuously. Parents should establish specific guidelines as to which kind of themes are appropriate and which are contrary to values of society.

Keep communication open with all children. Periodically visit the child᾿s room, and if you observe an abundance of occult items or drug paraphernalia, seek help at once. Finally, be sensitive and pay attention to warning signs.
